Global Warming

Global Warming
This was an amazing sight... an ice tongue from the winter still lingering in the summer, almost melted. Had to be very careful to get in, it was constantly dripping and seemed it would collapse anytime (like the hole that can be seen further away in the picture). This was in Cerro Lopez, near Bariloche, Argentina. At about 1600 meters over sea level.

This photo is so peaceful and beautiful. Today Al Gore's Live Earth concert's are being held all over the world to bring awareness to the environmental crisis we may all face.....Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks sang an incredible song....We Shall Be Free........Written by Garth Brooks....I wish we all could live by these words....

This ain't comin' from no prophet
Just an ordinary man
When I close my eyes I see
The way the world shall be
When we all walk hand in hand

When the last child cries for a crust of bread
When the last man dies for just words that he said
When there is shelter over the poorest head
Then we shall be free

When the last thing we notice is the color of skin
And the first thing we look for is the beauty within
When the skies and the oceans are clean again
Then we shall be free

So, have alittle faith and hold out 'cause we shall be free

When we're free to love anyone we choose
When this world's big enough for all different views
When we're all free to worship from our own kind of pew
Then we shall be free

Stand straight, walk proud 'cause we shall be free

And when money talks for the very last time and nobody walks a step behind
When there's only one race and that's mankind......

Serene Danger

Serene Danger
Originally uploaded by _Hans van de Vorst.

Behind this river over 200,000 people have been evacuated because of risks of waterfloods. Although the water level is dropping now, the danger of dyke breaches has not passed.

The national government is now in charge of the evacuation. Roads are closed and the army is checking homes for people who stayed behind, they are also guarding the affected areas to prevent looting.

The national telecommunications company: PTT-Telecom has advised not to make telephone calls to the endangered area's, unless absolutely necessary, in order to prevent overloadeded telephone networks. An extra communications network between the crisis centers has been set up.

All of this happened in February 1995. Fortunately our house is 8,2 meters above sea level, but as you might know more than half of the Netherlands is below sea level were appr. 65% of the people live. Climate change is an immediate threat for the Dutch.

The famous Dutch saying "God created the sea, but the Dutch made the shore" is no longer full proof.

once upon a time...

once upon a time...

Once upon a time…

There was a ramp attached to these pilings that this eagle now sits upon. Attached to the boat ramp, was a boat house that thrived. Hundreds of patrons a day visited this boat house and bought bait, rented boats, stocked up on supplies for hours or days upon the water. I spent 18 years of my life with my grandfather and family frequenting this boat house and walked the boards that made up the ramp that floated upon the water here.

At the other end of the beach was another boat house. The same activity occurred there as well. But not now.

Now, there is decay and damage from numerous storms of the recent past. Now, instead of lines of cars to visit, there are lines that say “do not cross: condemned property”. Since my childhood, families have left. There is little life on the beach now. Now, people have gobbled up this prime real estate and put up new homes with signs that say “private property’ and you have to scurry along past their property and piercing eyes if you linger too long.

The innocence of this beach is gone. The people that made this beach what it was in the past are gone—just like the boat ramp that was here not so long ago. There used to be continual beach fires in the evenings. Fireworks used to boom and blast throughout the year and seasons. Children played, laughed, dug holes, built sand castles, etc. No, not now. Greed has taken over.

I spent an entire day on this beach of my past. I looked right and left and saw no one. The laughter of my father, Sara, my grandparents and myself seemed to echo along the water. Boats no longer pass continually from East to West. There are hardly any more boats attached to the buoys along the shoreline as well.

Instead of enjoy this perfect piece of real estate, we as a whole want to own it. We want to call it ours. We want to look at the water, say we own the view and the piece of it—yet we forget to get sand between our toes. We forget to savor the salt water, walk on the tidal flats, hit rocks with a stick into the water. We just want to own things—we neglect to enjoy them.

Sometimes I get so mad at society and us as people. We take our kids for granted, our spouses, our short time on this planet, and in general—this planet. We never seem to be happy with what we have even though the only thing we can and will take with us in the end is only the memories of our time on this planet. We neglect the planet and our surroundings and are not leaving anything for our kids.

Things come and go in this world. And although the boat house and ramp are gone, the pilings still create for the perfect perch for this eagle and his/her mate. I have the memories and no longer need the boat house to sustain those memories. I just hope we are aware of our world in whole and that we leave something for our children to enjoy just as I enjoyed this beach and that boat house for 18 years.

Brook

Brook

Drenched by drizzle just minutes before I took the shot, this brook continue to flow deep down in this forest. Sustaining life to several plants and trees, birds and insects.

Will it still be here for another hundred years? The answer resides within us. Please help protect the ecosystem.

To understand more deeply on why we need streams, go to this site: www.climatecrisis.net, or watch the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" starring Al Gore.

"This will be my last photo of this iris this year.

Today I have another reason besides work to stay indoors: Once again the smoke from the fires decimating south Georgia has made its way up to metro Atlanta, and the air quality is unhealthy. Unless we all over the globe start doing something to slow down climate change and global warming, massive fires and devastating floods will become increasingly commonplace. Here's what individuals can do to help, though not much really can be accomplished until world leaders spearhead serious efforts to reduce our effect on the climate, which sadly does not seem to be happening. But do let's do what we can in our own small ways."

"I went on holiday with my friends. Jane and Barry. There they are in the photo. We heard London used to be very busy but it's changed.... a little bit. Apparently I even visited... on foot when I was three.

There was much less rubbish and it was quieter. I mean these days of course.

We stayed for three hours then had to head back to the high-lands. I'll treasure every moment.

My Dad used to live here... can you believe it?"

Discipline Is The Bridge

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment. This is is very true for the changing world climate. The information and goals are there but we don't accomplish anything. It's time we unite, build that bridge and change things rapidly. Radical and creative solutions are needed.

Based on the scientific information provided I'm afraid our planet has reached or passed the tipping point with global warming already.
